Als klassischer Musiker hatte ich bei der Auseinandersetzung mit Piazzollas Musik zunehmend das Gefühl, mich auf einen anderen Planeten zu begeben. Nicht auf den ersten Blick, denn ich bin natürlich vertraut mit Bach, mit dem Anteil an Piazzollas Musik, der von Strawinsky, Ravel oder Bartok inspiriert wurde. Auch die anderen Seiten seiner Musik, der Jazz und der Tango Argentino waren natürlich an sich nichts Fremdes. Doch beim Umsetzen dieser Musik auf dem eigenen Instrument wurde immer deutlicher, wie eigenständig und anders Piazzollas Musik wirklich ist, wie einzigartig und unvergleichbar der musikalische Kosmos ist, den er durch die Kombination dieser Elemente geschaffen hat. Das war, wie gesagt, auf den ersten Blick nicht so bedeutend, aber beim zweiten und dritten. Und mit jedem weiteren Hinsehen wurde das immer spürbarer. – Friedrich Kleinhapl

As a classical musician engaging with the music of Astor Piazzolla, I sometimes felt as if I was on a different planet. Not at first glance, tough: of course I am familiar with the music of Bach and with the parts of Piazzolla’s œuvre that are inspired by the music of Stravinsky, Ravel, or Bartók. And although I am not unfamiliar with the other facets of his work – Jazz and the Tango Argentino – the act of playing Piazzolla’s music on my own instrument made me realise how individual and truly different it is, and what a unique and incomparable cosmos he created by putting together this combination of musical elements. As I said, this wasn’t necessarily obvious at first glance, but at second and third it was, and it became ever more noticeable as we went along. – Friedrich Kleinhapl
